Welcome to the Adopt a Bull Program, an initiative dedicated to cattle breeding and conservation. This page outlines our Breeding Policy, A New Hope Conservation efforts, and Veterinary Aid support, complete with project details and financial insights.

Adopt a Bull Program Breeding Policy

The Adopt a Bull Program is committed to enhancing cattle breeding by focusing on the development of indigenous dairy breeds such as Sahiwal, Red Sindhi, and Gir. Our efforts aim to improve milk yield and breeding practices across the region. Additionally, we implement crossbreeding strategies, pairing non-descript cattle with exotic breeds like Holstein-Friesian and Jersey to boost productivity.

A cornerstone of this initiative is the National Project for Cattle and Buffalo Breeding (NPCBB), launched in 2000 with a budget of ₹402 crore. The NPCBB has ambitious goals:

  • Bring all breedable females under organized breeding programs.
  • Improve indigenous breeds and prevent their extinction.

Special emphasis is placed on conserving the Tharparkar breed, particularly in the Jaisalmer and Barmer districts. Known for its resilience to extreme climates, this breed is vital to the region’s heritage. Our conservation efforts focus on maintaining its purity through selective breeding with non-descript cattle.

Factors Responsible for Tharparkar Breed Decline

Despite its strengths, the Tharparkar breed faces significant challenges:

  1. Frequent Droughts: Reduced semen availability due to water scarcity.
  2. Uncontrolled Crossbreeding: Leading to dilution of breed purity.
  3. Poor Public Awareness: Limited scientific knowledge among farmers.
  4. Weak Market Infrastructure: Inefficient marketing for cattle and milk.
  5. Neglected Castration Programs: Lack of control over scrub bull breeding.
  6. Fodder Shortages: Insufficient green fodder and balanced nutrition.

Adopt a Bull Program – A New Hope Conservation

This section introduces a sustainable, eco-friendly conservation plan designed to leverage the region’s natural resources. Our focus is on preserving drought-resistant Tharparkar cows, ensuring their survival and prosperity for future generations.

Project Details

  • Location: GOLDEN GRASS DEVELOPMENT PROJECT FARM, situated at 1452 RD 11 WL Mehargarh.
  • Why Jaisalmer?: Identified as the most suitable site due to its central position in RMP Stage II and favorable conditions for conservation. The Government of Rajasthan has also committed to developing 12 seed production farms across the state, as reported in the press, to support such initiatives.
